What Is Candle Magic
and How Does It Work?

Before I became Divination Barbie, before the readings, the rituals, the clients from all over the world, I was a woman sitting alone with a candle and a prayer and not much else. And something shifted. That is where my relationship with candle magic began.

It is one of the most ancient, most accessible, and most misunderstood tools in spiritual practice. So let me break it down the way I wish someone had broken it down for me.

What candle magic actually is

Candle magic is the practice of using a candle as a focal point for intention. Fire has been used in ritual across virtually every spiritual tradition in human history because fire transforms. It converts one thing into another. It releases. It illuminates. It calls energy into motion.

When you work with a candle intentionally, you are using that transformative quality to direct energy toward a specific outcome. The candle becomes a physical anchor for your intention. It holds the working while it burns, continuously transmitting the energy you have set into the space and the universe around it.

This is not superstition. This is physics dressed in sacred language. Everything is energy. Intention is one of the most powerful forces we have access to. Candle magic is simply a structured, time-tested method for directing that force.

How a candle working is actually done

There is a significant difference between lighting a candle and burning a candle with intention. The preparation is everything.

Before a candle is ever lit in my practice, it is cleansed, energetically cleared of anything it may have absorbed before it reached me. Then it is dressed: anointed with oils selected specifically for the intention of the working. Herbs may be applied. Symbols may be carved into the wax. Each element is chosen for a specific purpose, not for aesthetics.

The candle is then set in a prepared space, on an altar or a specific arrangement that supports the working, and lit with clear, focused intention. A prayer, a petition, or a spoken intention is used to open the working and direct the energy. Then the candle burns.

When I perform candle work for clients, I watch the candle throughout its burn and report back what I observe. A candle that burns clean and bright with a strong, steady flame is communicating very differently than one that flickers, burns low, or leaves heavy wax residue. Reading the candle is its own form of divination.

What candle magic can and cannot do

Candle magic, like all spiritual work, is not a replacement for action. It is a force multiplier. It clears energetic paths. It aligns unseen forces in your favor. It removes spiritual interference and opens doors. But you still have to walk through them.

I have seen candle work create genuinely stunning shifts in people's lives, relationships that moved, money that arrived, situations that resolved in ways no strategy could explain. I have also worked with people who wanted candle magic to do what only they could do. No working will replace a conversation you need to have, a decision you need to make, or an action you need to take.

Candle magic and hoodoo

In my practice, candle magic is deeply rooted in hoodoo, the African American folk magic tradition that is the foundation of how I work. In hoodoo, candle work is not casual. It is precise, intentional, and performed with full respect for the tradition from which it comes.

Every working I take on for a client begins with a conversation about their situation and intention. I do not perform workings blindly, and I do not take on requests that conflict with my ethics. The goal is always to create genuine movement toward a real outcome.
